How does Outliers connect to MY life?

In the story Outliers, Malcom Gladwell touches upon subjects and theories that effect countries, cultures and people. Gladwell has a theory of why things are the way they are and then backs these theories up with facts and stories from people’s lives. Gladwell’s non-fiction book has a way of connecting to my life and many others.

One point that Gladwell made is about age and that the month you were born dictates your future in sports such as hockey. Also he stated that the year you were born can determines how successful or how much money you will make in your life. This currently relates to my life. Right now it's a very exciting time for many kids around my age. All the talk is about if you have your liscense or when you will be getting it! The month you were born is directly corilated to you being one of the first or last kids in your grade to get their liscense. There are some advantages to this like becoming more independent sooner or having to wait longer, or the hockey players being better and having more time to practice (22). When we get our permit in lets say Janruary, the three months advantage a person can have can make them a better driver "But they [hockey players] also got a big head start, an oppertunity that they neither deserved or earned.". This advantage was given to them by their parents. Gladwell figured this out by studying hockey players, but he also researched people like Bill Gates and the 10,000 rule.

In life it's not a supries to anyone that the harder you work, the better you get at something. Dedication is key to wanting to be being good at something and even the best. Gladwell's theory is that after a certain age, children split and some become the best and the others, well, don't. "And what's more, the people at the very top don't just work harder or even much harder than everyone else. They work much, much harder". (39) This idea is related to my life currently and was more so when I was younger. I used to be in band and Gladwell mentions that the people with amazingly good talents worked harder and longer to get where they are now. I found this to be completely true. I played the saxophone and we were divided into two groups. We all knew that group one was the good group and group two was not. This was known beause the people in my group just did what we could do to get by while the other group practiced and worked until they could play their music with no errors. These are the people that are still playing and are experiencing greatness."The amatures never practiced more than about three hours a week...The professionals, on the other hand, steadily increased their practice time every year until by the age of twenty they, like the violinists, had reached ten thousand hours". (39) Life is full of people who have their goals set and know what they want. They know that they want to become the best they can be and they do this by practicing 10,000 hours jsut like The Beatles. Our favorite celeberties and singers didn't get good at what they do over night. "We [The Beatles] played seven nights a week. At first we played almost nonstop till twelve-thirty, when it closed, but as we git better the crowds stayed until two some mornings." (49) 10,000 hours of work is where you get to greatness.

Sometimes we don't have a choice with how successful we will be like the hockey players born in August. They couldn't have controled when their birthday was so that they are as "good" as the players born in Janruary. Sometimes we just get chances in life that help us become who we are. I was lucky enough to grow up in the middle class and have the education that I have. "Poor kids may out-learn rich kids during the school year. But during the sumer, they fall far behind."(258) Some kids only have the chance to learn during school but being raised in a middle class family has helped me learn all year round from the outside influences that I can encounter. Martia would not have had the chance for an education with out KIPP. The harsh schguel of a twelve hour day every day got Martia on the right track with education. "The way she was saying it made it sound so hard I thought I was going to prision."(263) Martia thought KIPP was going to be really hard, and it was. She now knew what it was like to be grown up at age 12. My school experiences (thank god) have not been anything like this but I know the intense schguel and how much Martia has to work to keep up her new life.

Gladwell comes up with ideas that I think would take a long time to understand get would take a good length of time to get enough data to confirm his thesis'. A lot of them relate to my life and the people around me. The birth month and the 10,000 hours of work have a lot to do with every day life. Your birth month along with chances are not something you can control but you can control the amount of hours you work on something to become professional.

Perspective Poetry Prompt

BUILDING:  Describe a building as seen by a man whose son has just been killed in a war.  DO NOT mention the son, war, death, or the old man doing the seeing

Saddly,
It reminds me of him.
Everything reminds me of him.
The sounds on the inside echo the past 18 months
My imagination of the blood and tears that were shed
make me shiver
The outside portrays the parts we dont see.
The memories they bring home

But you didnt.

No one is lucky
I am not lucky
This reminds me of you its brand new
so young
but is so worn
the cover still looks calm and happy
even after the hurrican swept through
even after there was no one to take care of it
even when sights and sounds could have wrecked you
it stood

you stood

It took only a short time to destruct
would have happened to anything
your outside finally caught up with you
the pain was out of anyones control

it fell
and so did you.

Microfiction: The old woman turned and smiled

The old woman turned and smiled as I handed her purse back to her. She was the helpless victim of a crime. As she was walking through the park, a man with a bigger build than I and hands large enough to palm a basketball, simply walked by taking the purse from her vieny left hand.
Little did I know, there was a bigger problem. The man I tackled was working for the FBI. It was a way to get the elderly woman to file a complaint and while doing so get arrested on the spot. But why?
This woman has been the biggest crook this town has seen, and shes been unable to get caught. Stealing money and things here and there add up. I just realized I had helped the thief in our neighborhood. But this woman did not go to the police station, she went about her usual life, stealing and getting away with it. Until one day she was gone.

Young Drivers' Safety

Personally I cannot wait to get my permit! I'm so excited and I'm counting down the days...(3 months from tomorrow). I think it's a hassle to have to wait 6 months after I get my permit to get my liscense especially after knowing kids who didn't have to wait at all. Also all of the rumors going around saying we have to wait a year after getting our permit in New York are starting to make me mad.
The author clearly states facts but only once does he really talk about his opinion. He says that this new law prohibiting you to drive anyone else for six months may be annoying but he says that it's safer. He also says that its parents responsibilty is to make these restrictions affective. He says that if this law saves one life it will have been worth it, I agree with it but I don't know if everyone will be willing to do that. His evidence is that the number of crashes decreased 28% from 2007-2009.

Culinary Poetry Prompt

This morning I woke up to the  beeping of the oven
The smell coming from the kitchen surrounds me
The banana bread is fresh and delectable
This is when it's the best.

As I glance from spot to spot in the kitchen
I realize no one in my house could be emanciated
the amount of food is superfluous
yet it all seems so necessary

With one taste of my mothers food
You would think she was educated in alimentary
From caserols to pancakes everything is as tasty as the next
Make sure you get a taste of her food for your self.

TU Tuesday Guest Speaker

Kristi Gustafson Barlette
Poise: Gustafson Barlette seemed very comfortable talking in front of us. She stood tall with her shoulders back. She was able to answer every question with an answer that wasnt just a yes or no question, she gave us detail and that helped us learn more about her. One example of this is right when she got into the classroom she took front center of the classroom and proudly told us her name and occupation.

Clarity: Gustafon Barlette had a very good vocabulary but she also used words that we could understand. Gustafon Barlette sopke clearly so we could all hear her and what she had to say (even though she talked super fast). She also seemed very prepared which helped her when it came to answering questions and the way that she should answer them. Also the answers to our questions were straight forward, and we got the answer that we wanted/ needed.
Gustafson Barlette got asked if there were times that she wanted to move to a different occupation, and instead of telling us no (to get us to like journalism) she told us the truth, she told us that when she was first beginning she hated it and the criticism that came along with any piece she wrote, but she said that it began to get better and she got stronger as not only a writer but a person.

Volume: She had a nice loud voice, she projected her voice and looked at us when she talked which always helps. Gustafon Barlette wasnt afraid to answer any question, and even when she got embarassed for swearing, she kept speaking loud so we could hear her instead of getting embarassed and suddenly shy.

Information: She gave us a lot of information on her day to day schugel and her life as a writer. We didn't ask too many questions about her writings in specific but the questions that we did ask, she gave very good responses that fully answered our questions, and more. She did give a lot of details that maybe we all didnt need to know but I don't think she went over board inorder to mosy her way around an answer.
She told us about her favorite experience, and also she said things about her worst email shes ever gotten, but it was a question asked so she had to.

Organization: I think sometimes she had random thoughts going from talking about how much she loved cows to how she is on the radio. Fly 92.3 in the mornings. I think that she would have had good transition if she wasnt answering all of our questions.

I asked a few questions and so did my classmates, I was worried that it was going to be silent and no one was going to ask questions. but i was pleasently suprised. Everyone talked and had for the most part good questions that related to writing and her job at the times union. I would have asked more questions but i had become prepared wiht questions about her writing and not about her other life so  I couldnt get too many in. I asked her why a quarter back that wears a ring makes an article and I also asked her if she always got to write about things she was passionate about. She repsonded saying that in her blog, yes but sometimes she is given assignments that she isn't excited about but she still has to do a great job with it.

I think this was a good experience it teaches us to kind of "research" her a little to get prepared for the discussion. It also teaches us about the day in the life of a times union writer and what she gets to do. I think it may get some students more interested and excited to write when they are older. I think you should invite someone back in so we get a different perspective.

1.  “Playing Dairy Queen for a Day” (http://www.timesunion.com/living/article/Playing-dairy-queen-for-a-day-2229727.php

Questions:
What is a 4H'ers?
Did you have any experience with milking cows before? or have you just admired cows from afar?
On an every day basis there is only two people milking the cows?  dont they want more help? five hours is a long time to just be milking cows

Comments:
My family used to live on the farm and I used to hear many stories about cows and all of the animals living in the barn, along with all the hard work that went along with having your own farm.

The machines must add a whole other element to helping milk the cows. You have to be able to put the machine on the cow with out hurting it and know when to take it off.

Its hard work,  but I think after a while it would become second nature to you and its just something that you do naturally, every morning get up to start your day on the farm.

“Chron’s Patient Gets by with Family, Friends, and a Strong Routine” (http://www.timesunion.com/local/article/Everyman-voice-Rooney-dies-at-92-2253697.php)

Questions: Why didn't he like to sign autographs?
Did he enjoy dancing? Is that why he joined the dance school?
How long has he been working on 60 minnutes?

Comments:
I remember watching many 60 minutes with him on it, and my parents talking about him as a person and who he was. They always said he lived in albany.
Dudley says that she only calls him andrew, and i can relate to that because they have been best friends since they were six and my best friend ive known since i was little and I respect her as much as Dudley and Roony

It seems like he was one of the people who just lived to write and loved to write. He was very special and so was his writing. I think he will be missed on the show. He knows that and will miss it as much as he does.

“Ringers in the Extreme” http://www.timesunion.com/living/article/Ringers-in-the-extreme-2263911.php)

Questions:
Are ther really baraly anyone who wears there wedding ring non stop nowa days?
Why is this a big deal?
Why is wearing a wedding ring associated with Elliot spitzer?
Why isn't your wedidng ring just a sign of committment?

Comments: I dont think theres a problem with Ryan Fitzpatrick to wear his wedidng ring while he plays, because as long as he's not a lefty, there's not a lot that his ring is going to enable him to do.

Yes it may be a little dangerous to wear a ring, but he signed up for football,I think he's lucky if just his finger is broken
I don't think theres anything wrong with keeping your wedding ring on, or taking it off when necessary. But only when necessary because if not, people start to get the wrong idea. And so does your spouce.

I personally dont think we need to be worrying about wedding rings, and theres other things that we can be putting our energy toward.

Opinion Prompt 3.

Caffeine is a drug that should be monitored in teens.

I strongly disagree with this statement. Caffeine is a drug yes, but I don't think the addiction to coffee is severe. If caffeine was monitored in teens, I think first class in the morning would be worse than it is now. It helps people get up and moving on a cold dark winter morning. Coffee is delicious hot or cold. Cream or Black. Caffeine is also in soda, a dink thagt many people enjoy. Especially teens. I don't think caffeine should be monitored because soda is a drink that is enjoyed every day, or on special occasions and is a fun thing to have. If it was monitored I think caffeine would be consumed as much as it is now because of coffee and soda. Also parents will still buy it for themself so it would be at easy access to any teen.

I want to write about #84

84. Write about the last time you wore high heels or a necktie.
Recently my mom sister and I went to Minnesota for my cousins wedding. We were all excited to be there and to get dressed up in our new dresses and heels. After a day of decorating the room which evolved it from a boring lodge restaurant to a beautiful wedding reception with candels, lights and a dance floor.
The houses we were staying in looked liike tree houses and were up three flights of stairs. I was wearing new shoes (ones that I worn't used to) and was running down the stairs to catchi my cousin who was leaving right before us. i had to give her a sweater that seemed very important at that time. As I was running it seemed as though everyone in the world came out side of their house. My heel got cought in a crack in the wood and i fell. I fell for an eternity. I kept falling for what seemed like forever.  It was okay thought because I cought myself and got right up and walked away unharmed. Except for my shoes. My brand new black heels were now skinned and the toe was not black anymore, but thats okay I survived the fall.

P = Paris

I only wish that some time in my life I will be able to travel to different countries and one city I really want to visit is Paris.

1. Eiffel Tower "No building better symbolises Paris than the Tour Eiffel. Vintage double-decker lifts ply their way up and down; you can walk as far as the second level. There are souvenir shops, an exhibition space, a café and even a post office on the first and second levels. The smart Jules Verne restaurant, on the second level, has its own lift in the north tower."

2. Centre pompidou "The primary colours, exposed pipes and air ducts make this one of the best-known sights in Paris. The then-unknown Italo-British architectural duo of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers won the competition with their 'inside-out' boilerhouse approach, which put air-conditioning, pipes, lifts and the escalators on the outside, leaving an adaptable space within. The multi-disciplinary concept of modern art museum (the most important in Europe), library, exhibition and performance spaces, and repertory cinema was also revolutionary. The Centre Pompidou (or 'Beaubourg') holds the largest collection of modern art in Europe, rivalled only in its breadth and quality by MoMA in New York.  Sample the contents of its vaults (50,000 works of art by 5,000 artists) on the website, as only a fraction - about 600 works - can be seen for real at any one time. There is a partial rehang each year."

3. Sacré-Coeur "Work on this enormous mock Romano-Byzantine edifice began in 1877. It was commissioned after the nation's defeat by Prussia in 1870, voted for by the Assemblée Nationale and built from public subscription. Finally completed in 1914, it was consecrated in 1919 - by which time a jumble of architects had succeeded Paul Abadie, winner of the original competition. The interior boasts lavish mosaics."

4. The Louvre "The world's largest museum is also its most visited, with an incredible 8.5 million visitors in 2009. It is a city within the city, a vast, multi-level maze of galleries, passageways, staircases and escalators. It's famous for the artistic glories it contains within, but the very fabric of the museum is a masterpiece in itself - or rather, a collection of masterpieces modified and added to from one century to another. Some 35,000 works of art and artefacts are on show. Also The Grand Galerie and Salle de la Joconde (home to the Mona Lisa)"

5. Arc de Triomphe  "The Arc de Triomphe is the city's second most iconic monument after the Eiffel Tower - older, shorter, but far more symbolically important: indeed, the island on which it stands, in the centre of the vast traffic junction of l'Etoile, is the nearest thing to sacred ground in all of secular France, indelibly associated as it is with two of French history's greatest men."

6. Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris " Notre-Dame was constructed between 1163 and 1334, and the amount of time and money spent on it reflected the city's growing prestige. The west front remains a high point of Gothic art for the balanced proportions of its twin towers and rose window, and the three doorways with their rows of saints and sculpted tympanums: the Last Judgement, Life of the Virgin and Life of St Anne. Inside, take a moment to admire the long nave with its solid foliate capitals and high altar with a marble Pietà by Coustou."

7. Jardin & Palais du Luxembourg "
The palace itself was built in the 1620s for Marie de Médicis, widow of Henri IV, by Salomon de Brosse on the site of the former mansion of the Duke of Luxembourg. Its Italianate style was intended to remind her of the Pitti Palace in her native Florence. The palace now houses the French parliament's upper house, the Sénat (open only by guided visits). The mansion next door (Le Petit Luxembourg) is the residence of the Sénat's president. The gardens, though, are the real draw: part formal (terraces and gravel paths), part 'English garden' (lawns and mature trees), they are the quintessential Paris park. The garden is crowded with sculptures: a looming Cyclops (on the 1624 Fontaine de Médicis), queens of France, a miniature Statue of Liberty, wild animals, busts of Flaubert and Baudelaire, and a monument to Delacroix. There are orchards and an apiary."

After learning about all these tourist attractions it makes me want to learn the history of Paris and visit these attractions in person. It would be such a great experience.

Two heads are better than one

This saying remids me of a show when I was younger. The show is called Dragon Tales and two of the dragons are actually connected and share same arms and legs but they have different heads. One of their favorite sayings were two heads are better than one and I completely agree. I think that working by yourself creates character and you should be able to do things alone in life. But I also believe that when you work together things can get done soooner and a lot of the times better, but if you think its not better than what you could have done, thats okay because you were gaining experience and working with someone new. You tend to meet people when you have a group project and that helps a lot as well. Working with others can  be difficult but when you learn to move past that and work cohesivly as one the tasks that have to be accomplished faster better, and your part is easier.

Child's Walk Poetry Prompt

As I roll over in bed the sun shining through my almost opaque curtains wakes me up
Its not yet quarter to eight but I slide my feet into the slippers who are paitently awaiting my company
The morning due is still covering the grass as the mail man caually glides up our front steps
I can smell the pancakes being cooked from rooms away, the aroma making my stomach growl
As I pass from room to room I can't help but look at the same dresser, the same picture frame and the same rocking chair that I do every other morning.
But today, today is different
Today I linger in our family room a minute longer taking notice to the metals hanging on our walls
I glance at the lamp and wonder where it came from.
The room seems so foreign yet I walk through it every day
The house Ive lived in for nine years suddenly feels unfamiliar.

Halloween Story Starters

Everybody said the old Bosworth mansion was haunted..I didn't believe them so I decided to find out myself.
The walk over was dark and spooky. The crisp Halloween night had sounds lerking in the woods on either side of me. But, I wasn't scared. I was ready to debunk the theory of the gohst in the old Bosworth mansion. My friends tried to intimidate me saying how scary it was the last time they went, it didn't work but I decided to go alone, I didn't need anyone else to get scared in the mansion. If my parents ever found out they would censure me for sure, I needed ot be sly on this trip. Get in and out. There was an accessable door in the back that looked as if it hadn't been used in years. It creeked open and thats when i saw.. nothing. I decided to turn on my flashlight to meitigate the fear that was lurking inside me. The sounds I herd were not mellifluous yet they were remote. I had no idea where they were coming from. I could hear children roaming the streats and faint "Trick Or Treats". As I walked further into the mansion I started to relax, there was nothing to be afraid of, it was just a regular house, fully furnished with a little dust. Not two minnutes later was there a din because the chandelier fall right before my feet. I convinced myself it was just a coincidence. Three closets later I started to hear footsteps following me, when i moved it moved, when i stopped, it stopped but every time i turned around there was nothing. "Hello" i called  but recieved nothing but the wind howling return. The curtains started moving and the chairs rocking. From the outside I was nonchalant but my inside was wary but I was trying to mollify the situation. I didnt want to admit it, but i was scared. The mansion was haunted. I can now tell from experience. I ran the entire way home and I wasnt even worried about the consequences that would follow. I was getitng out of there as fast as I could.  The old Bosworth mansion was haunted..

Tree-devouring Chinese beetle reaches Albany County

decimated millions

decimated: to destroy a great number

vicinity for potential

instituting a quarantine
quarantine: a strict isolation imposed to prevent the spread of disease

small but destructive

signs of infestation

This article is about Chineese beetles that have killed millions of ash trees and one of these bugs have been found in New York. This bug has been brought in on cargo shipments through the Great Lakes. In 2008 NY banned the transport of untreated firewood. If the emerald ash borer  keeps spreading out 900 million ash trees will be in jepordy which is about 7% of the states forest. This bug population needs to be controlled before trees get destroyed.
The impact the author has a way to change the tone of the writing with the word choice. When they bigger words it makes the atricle sound more scientific than it really is such as saying decimated millions. This just tells us the bug destroyed millions of trees. Whent he author says  "instituting a quarantine"  they mean they want to stop the spread of disease but the word choice changes the way a reader reades the article as well as the tone.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

First off just looking through the list brought back so many memories. I can remember reading a least half of these books every night before bed. This book is special because I remember reading this with my aunt while eating milk and cookies. This was back before I could read, and I slowly remember being able to read this by my self. I always think about little kids when reading this book and relating the mouse to everything a little kid thinks. A kid never just want's one thing, and like the mouse you cant just give him a cookie, because he will ask for milk, and he will ask for a mirror, and he will ask for scissors, and so on and so on. Kids do the same thing, well at least i did! I think its a very cute story and I have many memories attached to this book.

O= Oneonta

Five reasons why I would want to go to Oneonta:
1. Location "Located in the Central New York Region, the City of Oneonta can be characterized as a friendly community -- one that is proud of its diversity, stability and beauty. With a population of just under 14,000 people, one of the City's finest attributes is its small town atmosphere. Residents and visitors alike are attracted to Oneonta because of its friendliness, its reputation as a great place to raise a family, its safety, and the overall perception that it is a family oriented community, "where everyone knows everyone else."
http://www.oneonta.ny.us/

2. "Diversity at the College is an inclusive value that encompasses race and ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity and gender expression, age, ability, socio-economic status, and other aspects of identity. We strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination; to respect the dignity of all persons; and to learn from differences in people, ideas, experiences and opinions."

3. Athletics Oneonta has many different sports for both men and women and it provides a variety of choices a long with everything a young athlete would need if injured or just to learn about what to do before and after a big game, race, or performance.

4. Clubs are also very prevalent at the school, there's many places that a student can get involved with and meet different and new people.

5.
NY State Resident
$ 5,270 Tuition
$ 1,326 Fees
$ 9,720 Room and Board*
$ 16,316 Total
Compared to other schools this is a very good price.

Three reasons why I would not want to go to Oneonta
1. Oneonta is very close to my house, Its only an hour and ten minutes away and i think I want to go to a school further away than that for my college experiments.

2. Also Oneonta is a state school and I would like to go to a private school so I can get a "better" education.

3. Also although the location is nice, the seasons can be very extreme with very long and freezing cold winters

Vintage Photo

The First Flight of the Wright Brothers
This photo is worth words to me because it is a huge step in technology and the way we are now transported. This picure is monumental and I think it's amazing how much planes have transformed from this day. I was just on the plane the other day and it was amazing me how quickly you can get from one side of the country to the other. The Wright Brothers making this achievement started this rapid change in how fast we get from state to state and even country to country. Also from just looking at this picture we can tell how "prehistoric" the materials are that were being used. I can't imagine flying in something made of wood or so small that only one person could fit comfortably in. This picture is worth words because people should know history and how what we have now once came to be.

"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet, powerfully built, and he advanced straight at me with a slight stoop of the shoulders, head forward, and a fixed from-under stare which made me think of a charging bull." - Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad

My intimidation was not going to get the best of me, I was going to face my fears. The man coming at me with his shoulders hunched knew what he needed to do, and I knew what that was. As he grew near i could hear the anger in his steps, and the room grow silent. I think it was just my imagination running wild but he seemed to grow a strange amount from when he entered the room to the four more steps he took in my direction. My puny arms and noodle like legs were nothing compared to what stood before me. I did not want to act cowardly, I was not a coward. But I am only twelve, I am only a little girl, terrified at what my father might do. Why had I run away? How could I have done this, I'm the responsible one too! I was ready for the pain and i winced as he came forward dropping down to my level. I could not look. What was he about to do? To my surprise, nothing. He grabbed my hand as we hurried from the building. My punishment came later when I was home sitting at the table with BOTH my mother and father. There was no physical pain, although now I'm wishing there was. Their disappointment was enough alone not counting the 3 weeks of help around the house and in the yard, along with no social life and homework was to be done before dinner. Why did I do this? Why did I do this?

http://blog.timesunion.com/animalrights/vegan-diets-more-expensive/3673/

The article I read called Vegan Diets More Expensive? (I think not). This article is about how easy it is to be a vegan and that it is not too expensive. The writer gives helpful tips to people who want to be a vegan, but think its too expensive."One of the top five excuses people use about not adopting a plant-based diet is that it is too expensive." I think this is true concidering our current economy and trying to buy healthier foods always get more expensive. Also if your feeding your entire family thats a lot of mouths to feed each night. " I do not have many mouths to feed, so it is less for me, but when you can put a meal together for under $2 or $3 per person, you are doing pretty good.  A restaurant meal would cost 3-4 times (or more) than that depending on the restaurant." I do not agree with this statement becuase where is she going to get enough food to feed and fill a family of four or five for only 15 dollars. This is not realistic, the tofu is expensive even with cut out coupons (if you even have them) and the side dishes can add up. Although she says its cheaper when you buy in bulk and freeze the food I do not always think this is true either because you have to buy all the equiptment to correctly freeze the food so it can last a long time. I also think its expensive to be a vegan beacause all meals every day have to be vegan and just making a meal can take time and energy. Money is definately a factor when deciding to become a vegan, i think its as expensive or more than eating meat products.

Skinny models are setting a bad example for teenagers

Americas Next Top Model is a show many young girls follow to see who will get voted off next. The television show displays a distorted body type. As the media grows so does the influence it has on children. When young girls are watching shows like these it makes them step back and look at them self, its only natural for teen girls to pick apart every aspect of their physical body. The littlest things become the biggest deal. Girls look at the bodies of models and celebrities as a realistic goal for them self and don't consider the other factors such as a physical trainer or a nutritionist watching their every move. Some girls think that the only way they can get the "perfect" body is to do things that seriously harm their body. It takes a very smart person to know that the models body is not possible for the every day person, and teen girls looking at these shows or in these magazines don't think beyond the outside and think they will be liked more if they  become like this model. It also gives teens a disturbed vision of what skinny is. I think if more models were a healthier weight slowly society would see that that is pretty and skinny isn't necessarily the best look.

A poem for 6 A.M.

6:00 a.m. My alarm clock is the mocking bird sining a new song, the unmistakable signal that it's time to start the day, breakfast on the table and clothes picked out means I'm ready for what's to come about.
7:00 a.m. The drive to school seems so long as I watch the time slowly tick by. Its 7:30 and I'm just turning into school, doesn't seem too late but there's still so much to do. The walk down the hall is never ending  as hard as I try I never seem to get to class on time.
8:00 a.m. Still in class, although still wishing i was curled in bed because of all the work i did the night before.
9:00  brings change although I wouldn't say for the better. Starting to get hungry, the day still beginning , 9:00 drags on and on.
10:00 Same teacher same stuff boring as always, I watch the second hand move around and around never bringing the favorite bell.
11:00 almost there bring hopes of the end of the day, lunch is beginning if you have first finally a time for socializing with our friends.
12:00 -2:00 is a blur but from two on its just fun, talking to friends or outside in the sun
3:00 means its time for practice something we've been dreading since the start of the day, two hours of running seems crazy to some but yes its my second year.
5:30 means freedom and time to go home with so much to do and so little time, all i want is dinner and a lime

Web Gallery of Art

This picture reminds me of a painting that is hanging in my living room. I look at this picture all the time, every time I sit on my day bed i look forward and see a picture resembling theses angels. I don't know why but i really seem to like this photo. It's very different than anything you would see in a modern house today or even anything you would see an artist now a days create. The angels remind me of all different people portraying different personalities. The angels all seem to be moving and doing their own thing, the artist makes the angels all work together when there far apart. I love art and have always wished I could be good at painting and drawing. One of my greatest frustrations is being able to picture it in my head, but no be able to put it on paper. This artist seemed able to do that with ease. Although I do wonder if this was easy for Apollo or if it took him years. I wonder if this is what he wanted it to look like or if it turned our completely different than he had planed. Just like many other things in life.

Haste; does not bring success -121-

My fortune: Haste, does not bring success. This fortune reminds me of multiple times in my life when I've worked so hard to get no outcome. One of my favorite examples - and probably my mom’s, is, spending hours among hours slaving away to clean the smallest messiest room in my house - my room. Clothes scatter the floor; random trinkets cover my dresser, drawers open with clothes hanging out. The mess seems as if army of men had only minutes to search the room for their lost hamster. Looking for something that could be anywhere is only a task I could achieve; I’m the only one who knows where anything is in my room. Minutes later, the rooms a mess.

Nnnnnn.

No can be the simple answer that gets you out of any situation. No can also be long and complicated. Needs an explanation by the people who don't understand the meaning. Nagging only receives no as an answer. "nah" says the teacher with an informal answer. Neptune is not the planted closest to the sun. No. Not that either. New York is not in the south. North is more like it. Nick asks the Spanish teacher, "what is snow in Spanish?" Nieve is her response. Newspapers line the street with the title: New Important Information! "Nuclear bombs attacked Nepal." "Nation under house arrest!" "No attacker will ever get away with this!"

One day we'll stop waiting for change with our hands in our pockets

One day, we won't have our hands in our pockets.
one day, we won't ask who made the change
but say it was I.
one day, we wont just sit around
and watch change happen. we will do it.
one day, we will be the change we want to see in the world.
one day, we will have the strength to make things happen.
one day, we will make the world a better place
one day, we will make ourselves better
one day, we won't have our hands in our pockets
waiting for change to happen.
