Halloween Story Starters

Everybody said the old Bosworth mansion was haunted..I didn't believe them so I decided to find out myself.
The walk over was dark and spooky. The crisp Halloween night had sounds lerking in the woods on either side of me. But, I wasn't scared. I was ready to debunk the theory of the gohst in the old Bosworth mansion. My friends tried to intimidate me saying how scary it was the last time they went, it didn't work but I decided to go alone, I didn't need anyone else to get scared in the mansion. If my parents ever found out they would censure me for sure, I needed ot be sly on this trip. Get in and out. There was an accessable door in the back that looked as if it hadn't been used in years. It creeked open and thats when i saw.. nothing. I decided to turn on my flashlight to meitigate the fear that was lurking inside me. The sounds I herd were not mellifluous yet they were remote. I had no idea where they were coming from. I could hear children roaming the streats and faint "Trick Or Treats". As I walked further into the mansion I started to relax, there was nothing to be afraid of, it was just a regular house, fully furnished with a little dust. Not two minnutes later was there a din because the chandelier fall right before my feet. I convinced myself it was just a coincidence. Three closets later I started to hear footsteps following me, when i moved it moved, when i stopped, it stopped but every time i turned around there was nothing. "Hello" i called  but recieved nothing but the wind howling return. The curtains started moving and the chairs rocking. From the outside I was nonchalant but my inside was wary but I was trying to mollify the situation. I didnt want to admit it, but i was scared. The mansion was haunted. I can now tell from experience. I ran the entire way home and I wasnt even worried about the consequences that would follow. I was getitng out of there as fast as I could.  The old Bosworth mansion was haunted..

Tree-devouring Chinese beetle reaches Albany County

decimated millions

decimated: to destroy a great number

vicinity for potential

instituting a quarantine
quarantine: a strict isolation imposed to prevent the spread of disease

small but destructive

signs of infestation

This article is about Chineese beetles that have killed millions of ash trees and one of these bugs have been found in New York. This bug has been brought in on cargo shipments through the Great Lakes. In 2008 NY banned the transport of untreated firewood. If the emerald ash borer  keeps spreading out 900 million ash trees will be in jepordy which is about 7% of the states forest. This bug population needs to be controlled before trees get destroyed.
The impact the author has a way to change the tone of the writing with the word choice. When they bigger words it makes the atricle sound more scientific than it really is such as saying decimated millions. This just tells us the bug destroyed millions of trees. Whent he author says  "instituting a quarantine"  they mean they want to stop the spread of disease but the word choice changes the way a reader reades the article as well as the tone.

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie

First off just looking through the list brought back so many memories. I can remember reading a least half of these books every night before bed. This book is special because I remember reading this with my aunt while eating milk and cookies. This was back before I could read, and I slowly remember being able to read this by my self. I always think about little kids when reading this book and relating the mouse to everything a little kid thinks. A kid never just want's one thing, and like the mouse you cant just give him a cookie, because he will ask for milk, and he will ask for a mirror, and he will ask for scissors, and so on and so on. Kids do the same thing, well at least i did! I think its a very cute story and I have many memories attached to this book.

O= Oneonta

Five reasons why I would want to go to Oneonta:
1. Location "Located in the Central New York Region, the City of Oneonta can be characterized as a friendly community -- one that is proud of its diversity, stability and beauty. With a population of just under 14,000 people, one of the City's finest attributes is its small town atmosphere. Residents and visitors alike are attracted to Oneonta because of its friendliness, its reputation as a great place to raise a family, its safety, and the overall perception that it is a family oriented community, "where everyone knows everyone else."

2. "Diversity at the College is an inclusive value that encompasses race and ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, sexual identity and gender expression, age, ability, socio-economic status, and other aspects of identity. We strive to eliminate prejudice and discrimination; to respect the dignity of all persons; and to learn from differences in people, ideas, experiences and opinions."

3. Athletics Oneonta has many different sports for both men and women and it provides a variety of choices a long with everything a young athlete would need if injured or just to learn about what to do before and after a big game, race, or performance.

4. Clubs are also very prevalent at the school, there's many places that a student can get involved with and meet different and new people.

5.
NY State Resident
$ 5,270 Tuition
$ 1,326 Fees
$ 9,720 Room and Board*
$ 16,316 Total
Compared to other schools this is a very good price.

Three reasons why I would not want to go to Oneonta
1. Oneonta is very close to my house, Its only an hour and ten minutes away and i think I want to go to a school further away than that for my college experiments.

2. Also Oneonta is a state school and I would like to go to a private school so I can get a "better" education.

3. Also although the location is nice, the seasons can be very extreme with very long and freezing cold winters

Vintage Photo

The First Flight of the Wright Brothers
This photo is worth words to me because it is a huge step in technology and the way we are now transported. This picure is monumental and I think it's amazing how much planes have transformed from this day. I was just on the plane the other day and it was amazing me how quickly you can get from one side of the country to the other. The Wright Brothers making this achievement started this rapid change in how fast we get from state to state and even country to country. Also from just looking at this picture we can tell how "prehistoric" the materials are that were being used. I can't imagine flying in something made of wood or so small that only one person could fit comfortably in. This picture is worth words because people should know history and how what we have now once came to be.

"He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet, powerfully built, and he advanced straight at me with a slight stoop of the shoulders, head forward, and a fixed from-under stare which made me think of a charging bull." - Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad

My intimidation was not going to get the best of me, I was going to face my fears. The man coming at me with his shoulders hunched knew what he needed to do, and I knew what that was. As he grew near i could hear the anger in his steps, and the room grow silent. I think it was just my imagination running wild but he seemed to grow a strange amount from when he entered the room to the four more steps he took in my direction. My puny arms and noodle like legs were nothing compared to what stood before me. I did not want to act cowardly, I was not a coward. But I am only twelve, I am only a little girl, terrified at what my father might do. Why had I run away? How could I have done this, I'm the responsible one too! I was ready for the pain and i winced as he came forward dropping down to my level. I could not look. What was he about to do? To my surprise, nothing. He grabbed my hand as we hurried from the building. My punishment came later when I was home sitting at the table with BOTH my mother and father. There was no physical pain, although now I'm wishing there was. Their disappointment was enough alone not counting the 3 weeks of help around the house and in the yard, along with no social life and homework was to be done before dinner. Why did I do this? Why did I do this?

http://blog.timesunion.com/animalrights/vegan-diets-more-expensive/3673/

The article I read called Vegan Diets More Expensive? (I think not). This article is about how easy it is to be a vegan and that it is not too expensive. The writer gives helpful tips to people who want to be a vegan, but think its too expensive."One of the top five excuses people use about not adopting a plant-based diet is that it is too expensive." I think this is true concidering our current economy and trying to buy healthier foods always get more expensive. Also if your feeding your entire family thats a lot of mouths to feed each night. " I do not have many mouths to feed, so it is less for me, but when you can put a meal together for under $2 or $3 per person, you are doing pretty good.  A restaurant meal would cost 3-4 times (or more) than that depending on the restaurant." I do not agree with this statement becuase where is she going to get enough food to feed and fill a family of four or five for only 15 dollars. This is not realistic, the tofu is expensive even with cut out coupons (if you even have them) and the side dishes can add up. Although she says its cheaper when you buy in bulk and freeze the food I do not always think this is true either because you have to buy all the equiptment to correctly freeze the food so it can last a long time. I also think its expensive to be a vegan beacause all meals every day have to be vegan and just making a meal can take time and energy. Money is definately a factor when deciding to become a vegan, i think its as expensive or more than eating meat products.

Skinny models are setting a bad example for teenagers

Americas Next Top Model is a show many young girls follow to see who will get voted off next. The television show displays a distorted body type. As the media grows so does the influence it has on children. When young girls are watching shows like these it makes them step back and look at them self, its only natural for teen girls to pick apart every aspect of their physical body. The littlest things become the biggest deal. Girls look at the bodies of models and celebrities as a realistic goal for them self and don't consider the other factors such as a physical trainer or a nutritionist watching their every move. Some girls think that the only way they can get the "perfect" body is to do things that seriously harm their body. It takes a very smart person to know that the models body is not possible for the every day person, and teen girls looking at these shows or in these magazines don't think beyond the outside and think they will be liked more if they  become like this model. It also gives teens a disturbed vision of what skinny is. I think if more models were a healthier weight slowly society would see that that is pretty and skinny isn't necessarily the best look.
