Lonely Hearts Club: Sweet Choco loves balls, seeks home
"Pssst. I’ll tell you a secret if you promise not to tell my dogs I told you." Personification: Giving something human equalities
"The staff named him Choco because, as they put it, he’s sweeter than the finest chocolate" Metaphor: Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to suggest the likeness between them.
"I promise your heart will melt faster than a Hershey’s Kiss in a chocolate fondue." Metaphor: Comparing two things by using one kind of object or using in place of another to suggest the likeness between them.
"Sweet Choco loves balls, seeks home" is about a dog Choco who is a pitbull mix at the Hudsen Mohawk Humane Society. Choco is having troubles getting adopted due to his breed but in reality he is the sweetest dog that is so friendly, "He gave ma a big smile and ambled over wagging his tail to give me some kisses" says ryan. This shows that when using figurative language it makes it seem like the readers want to see the dog to get the same attention and that everyone should want or even need Choco in their life. The figurative language in this article really helps to get the love and attention of the readers because they are promoting the adoption of a dog. And in order to "sell a product" you need to grab the readers heart and attention. This article did just that stating "he’s sweeter than the finest chocolate".

HISTORENGA
Meat Packing
A time when food was scarce
Men working in factories
Government had too much control
And living conditions were inhumane
Propaganda made the war glorious
New York's economy was at a low
Upton St. Claire exposed the terrors
The secrets behind the meat packing industry
RAINBOW POEM
Camping
Red as the setting sun
Orange as life vest
Yellow as the fire
Green as the kayak
Blue as the fire
Indigo as the night sky
Violet as the tent
After the long day
of paddling down the river
star gazing was much needed
the tent cozy enough for sleep
and fire providing the heat
and snacks of smores and popcorn
surrounded by nature

Questioning Something in Nature
SPRINGBOARD POEM
SPRINGBOARD POEM
The rain
I asked the spring grass why it needed so much rain
It swayed in the wind for a while before answering,
a squeeky voice replied softly "Ask the flowers"
As i inched toward the daffodil, I noticed the petals,
seeming as if her yellow color was fading, so I asked
"Can you make it through the spring with out rain" And
her reply was stunning.
Her old voice creeked, implying a life of wear, she simply
said "no". The answer brought shock but i was intreged at how
wise the grass and daffodil both sounded.
Each day I see the trees stretching, the grass sprouting
and flowers blooming. Each day i ask " are you growing because of the rain"
there response always the same, "you will see"
waiting for the rain I noticed their growth slowing down,
They pleaded that I don't give them water, but why
One spring morning I rose to a down pour.
Worried about the newly birthed flowers I ran to the window,
To my suprise the flowers, the trees and the grass
were all singing and dancing, answering my question.
They were right I did see.

I Am
I am an optomistic girl
I see the deer leap into the black woods.
I hear the sound of the waves crashing ashore
I see a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk
I pretend death doesnt exist
I feel my curly hair fall to my back
I touch the soft fur of the puppy
I worry about others more than myself
I understand that this world is not perfect .
I dream of traveling the world
I try accomplish everything that I wish
I am an optomisitc girl

Vocabulary On My Mind
The glutton mollified their hunger by eating. She was very odious towards vapid food. She was venerate toward her school teachers and even the bus drivers. Her route home was obscure so sometimes she was transient on the bus and was the first stop, other times she had to sit through all the clamour and it took a long time to get home. The gluttons mothe was cordial and was a very good racontour. Her mother was consice everytime she talked, she was liked to laud the glutotn everytime she was discerning. Sometimes the glutton was sly and went to her friends house which was petty and trivial compared to studying for her final. But when the glutton is doing her homework she reuses paper and is very frugal compared to her friends who are prodigal and don't even recycle. The people who don't recycle are deleterious to the environment, just like eating junk is deleterious to your health. Sometimes to pacify herself the glutton does yoga eventhough her friends who have swagger tell her that its archaic but that is just an illusion. To the glutton what the people say is indiffernt because she doesn't care if people chastise the things she does.

What I Need to Know about WRITING AND WRITERS to Become a Better Writer
"What makes writing meaningful to an author"
blog what stands out from the presentations about writing and make that the topic of your Documentary
The four authors that came in to talk to us were all very enthusiastic about writing and it was something they love and are pasionate about. When they were describing what they do they seemed to have such joy in their voice and were excited about writing. It also stood out to me that to the four atuthors/poets wrote for their enjoyment and a hobby instead of a job. I understand that its very hard to make a living off of writing. Deb Smith was a traver that got to explore different countries and then get her essays published in magazines. The way Robyn Ringler, Deb Smith and Therese Broderick were talking it sounded like it was such a special moment to get your work published. I think that Deb smith has gotten so many opertunities in her lifetime through writing and thats something we could all cherish. Writing takes practice and Robyn Ringler said she has been to almost all of the writing classes in the capital region. And it gives courage to people who want to learn how to write or even become a better poet, fictional writer, or even non fiction essays. Inspiration comes from everywhere and Stephen Leslie said that he meditates and studied with a monk for 19 years and that helpes him come up with ideas for writing. I also learned that as best as they can they all write every day which is just a way to get thoughts down.

Round Four = Robyn Ringler
In the essay Dissection, Ringler uses very dark language to express this scary and painful time in her life. The first sentence in the essay is very informative and explains to us exactly how shes feeling and what is going on. "In the dark of night, at the age of forty-one, I should have been nestled in my husband’s arms, listening for my daughter’s even breathing in the next room. Instead, I lay on my bed, very still, eyes tight, my face pressed to the sheet, thoughts focused on just continuing to breathe. I had never felt such pain." I also liked when she repeated the idea of not being sick. "I can’t be sick. I will not be sick. I refuse to be sick", I think that when she repeats this idea it gives it more power and how she is NOT going to be sick. Ringler also talks about how she feels after what the doctor has said and the language she uses is simple. but i like the punctuation which helps empasize some words. "I know I should have felt relieved to have an answer, but instead, I felt angry. I did not want to hear his words. Until this moment, everyone had been smiling and hopeful. All of the tests had been negative. This doctor was serious and unwavering and was telling me I needed brain surgery. " In this quote specifically the words "I felt angry" and "All of the tests had been negative" and " I needed brain surgery". These grouping of words seems powerful because shes getting her point across and she made them the most important so we really get whats going on.
In the next essay I read "Letting Go" Ringler has a connection with Gloria a patient in the hospital she was working at and when she dided Ringler was very upset and felt that it was almso ther fault. "I began coming to work early and leaving late" Ringler was willing to give up her time to spend it with Gloria and learn about her and willing her to live because she was only 24. "The hospital gown, so easily changeable when soiled, took its place. Gloria could hardly breathe or swallow. A small sip of water dribbled down her chin. Her eyes were wide with the inability to get air The tumor was growing and there was no treatment. Our goal was to provide comfort and support". This shows how helpless Gloria was and how it touched Robyn's heart. I think that this essay was good and it had power in a different way. It wasn't angry like "Dissection" was it was sad and helpless knowing that she couldn't do anything because she would die no matter what.
As I was reading "Hanging with Horses" I was smiling and laughing to myself. I used to horseback ride a few years ago and I can relate to her feelings. I know what its like to look down and it to seem like you are 20 feet high. I love the humor in the way she wrote the essay. "My breath quickened as I imagined Dan running away with me suspended at his side. I looked for Lily to help. But, when she saw me dangling by my bra, she took a step back and scanned the ring to see if anybody was watching. " I think this is so funny because I can imagine it happening to me and my mom. Her simple language makes it funny like " running away with me suspended at his side"."I learned then that an adolescent girl will not help a half naked mother hanging from a horse. When she saw my bare breasts, Lily turned her back and started walking toward the door." this also made me laugh becaus like the other two its a different type of power, its the type of humor where shes getting the story across in a different way. Im sure she could have looked at the anger in this essay but she didn't and I think thats why I liked it.

Round Three= Stephen Leslie
I don't completely understand the Haibun form of poetry but while I was reading Stephen Leslie's poems I started to get a feel for what they were. In the poem Her Voice, I like the short thoughts in the sentences that makes it almost choppy but still flows like here, " She studies the maps and quickly computes a new route. She only speaks when necessary. Her voice, while feminine, is neither sexy nor nagging." The poems also have 3- 4 short lines at the bottom. Which I like because it almost gives you the "answer" to the begining part of the poem
"Cold black granite walls
The Vietnam Memorial
I touch Joe's name "
The poem keeps you guessing which I really like but then at the end helps you figure out the mystery which is something I think is cool. In Elevator music, shows the side of Leslie where the poem is very emotional and you relate or have empathy becaus eof the story or the experience.
My poem:
Baseball Hat
Simple. Orange hat with the brim, so warn its fraying. Clemson? Not the reason to be bought. The hat is simpel, vibrant. Nothing more, nothing less. The stories mean so much more. Nicknames embroidered on the side. Growing up, with the hat, in the hat. Protection from the evils of the world. Snow. Rain. The Sun.
Simple joy
Much protection
Baseball Hat

Round Two= Deb Smith
I read Mussel Man--Rome, Italy and learned about the people living in Rome and a little about the restaurants and differnt types of transportation. Smith said " traveling like a sardine on the packed subway" this implies that the subway is very crowded and that a lot of people in Rome use the subway rather than driving or taking a taxi. I think that its a lot like any city where we walk or catch the train or subway. I also learned "At La Veccia Roma, the action was lively, the service quick and the people entertaining" about the people. A man also walked in started singing "Dressed in a camel hair coat, he clutched a small pile of sheet music...smiled and began to sing" this shows how nice people are and how open they are to culture.
She talks about her experience in Rome and encoperates the people and the way of life into this essay. She talks about the people in the restaurant and the ways of transportation when she was talking about the rainy day with her son.
Listening to an audio is very different than reading it. When you listen to it you can enjoy it more rather than worrying about making sure you pronounce the words correctly or if you understand it well enough. When listening to it, its almost easier, and you can hear how the words sound, if they flow or if they are choppy. In Revenge of the Toothfairy she says "dampens the doorstep" when talking about only a few people going to the dentist, but i liked hearing this because it flowed. She also talks abou the tuth fairy in a negative way it seems. But i liked listenig to the sound of "the roar of a drill" because drills dont roar.
What is your job? What do you have to do for it? Do you write all the time? Have you ever got really fustrated when writing?

Round One= Therese Broderick
The three poems that I read were "Near Mount Holyoke" , "Safety in Numbers" , and "I Love You". In each poem I can tell how pationate she is about many aspects of her life. She loves her daughter more than life and I can tell just by reading THREE poems and skimming through others. I can tell how appreciative she is of people and all the little things, and she takes time in her every day life to show this ( see third quote) . I can tell how artistic she is through her poems placing the words with a meaning and a purpose. Some of Broderick's poems are creative in the way they are layed out but others are more conserved in the sence that to get th point all we have to do is read it. In the poem "Near Mount Holyoke" I like the emphasis she had on some of the words, and this stood out to me ...
"Her bowed head
and closed eyes
are softly swiped by
caravans of
lambs "
I pause in all the right places so there is more drama and also in her biography I learned that she wanted her poems to be "When I write any new poem, I intend for it to be a beautiful work of human language (spoken/heard) that leads to wonder about the human condition. I do not intend for my poems to be vehicles of social reform, community reparation, personal healing, or spiritual salvation" To me this means that she wants people to wonder and read the poems while they're thinking of the way humans are but at the same time realizes she cannot control who reads her poems and what they think.
In the poem safety in numbers I like the way she admits that her whole day is affected because of this piece of information on the news. I like that she talks about her creal and even her daughters socks. They all have to be in pairs because thats safe. One of my favorite of her qotes (so far) is "Thirty consonants, sixteen vowels, fourteen syllables: We give thanks for our plenty when others have so littele".
The last poem that i read was "I love you" and the poem talks about how you can see someone growing up and in some cases getting hurt from experiences but that is something they need to learn. I think that Broderick recognizes many things people don't such as the effort it took to teach her daughter to say the words "I love you" and now she can say them easily to some teenage boy. Also when she says that she "...gives thanks for our plenty when others have so little" is her recognizing that she has things others don't and she is thankful.
1. Is writing poetry a type of escape for you?
2. How do you know if your poems are "Good"?
